Nature lovers have an excellent base in Veenhuizen. On one side there is the rugged Fochteloërveen, and on the other the lovely dale of the Slokkert, a brook that meanders through the green grassland.
The Slokkert suffered the fate of many streams in the 1960s: it was channelled for agriculture. But a few years ago, its natural course was partially restored. The brook snakes as it did before through wet grassland, along broad sandy paths, hedgerows and pools, creating a small but fine nature area.
The Drenthepad (Drenthe path) runs through the stream valley. You just have to follow the red-yellow markers from the Veenhuizen begraafplaats (cemetery). It can sometimes be quite soggy around the stream, so wear sturdy footgear!
