The legacy of Veenhuizen includes more than a hundred listed monuments, plus a wealth of immaterial heritage. This legacy deserves protection. And it is getting it, because fortunately the tide has turned. Where many beautiful buildings in Veenhuizen were demolished a few decades ago, today most of the monuments have been restored. Many of the renovated buildings have a been repurposed and Veenhuizen has even been placed on the provisional list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, together with the other colonies of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid (Society of Humanitarianism): The former penal colony and Rijkswerkinrichting Veenhuizen (Veenhuizen State Labour Institution) is a historic site with a future.
