Repurposing Local Heritage Assets
Sustainable repurposing of local heritage assets – this is a theme that fits the Veenhuizen of today to a tee.
The village is undergoing extensive development with sustainability as a high priority. Many of the historical buildings have been given a new purpose in recent years.
For instance, the former hospital complex Bitter en Zoet (Bitter and Sweet) now houses a stylish hotel and restaurant. As of recently, the old grain mill in the Maallust complex houses a beer brewery. You will learn a lot about the history of Veenhuizen in the Prison Museum housed in the former Tweede Gesticht (Second Asylum) of the colony.
Upon winning the EDEN Award, Veenhuizen has become part of the network of European Destinations of Excellence. This network promotes sustainable tourism development in the European Union through an exchange of knowledge and experience.
